It’s that time of year again when all sorts of ghoulish characters can be found roaming the streets. Thankfully it’s often just a child, or sometimes an adult, dressing up and celebrating Halloween with their friends. It’s this time of year though, that hundreds of people get injured in accidents and Halloween quickly goes from good scary to bad scary if fire precautions aren’t taken.
Here at FireAngel we don’t want to spoil the treats to be had this Halloween but we do want to warn you of the potential dangers that can be faced from fire whilst celebrating at this time of year. After all, we don’t want Halloween to be scary for the wrong reasons…
With young children dressed up for trick or treating in the dark, houses filled with candle-lit pumpkins and electrical decorations lining front gardens, the risk of fire is particularly high on All Hallows Eve. That doesn’t mean you have to give up on winning ‘scariest house in the neighbourhood’ just yet though. To keep your little ghosts and goblins protected and help everyone enjoy Halloween safely this year, follow our FireAngel tips below:
• Choose decorations and costumes that are made with flame resistant, flame retardant or non-combustible materials – and keep an eye on those long billowing capes!
• If your clothes catch on fire, then Stop, Drop, and Roll – teach this technique to children too.
• Never make lanterns from plastic bottles or other containers – this is extremely dangerous and if handled carelessly could result in burns.
• Fill pumpkins with battery powered candles to minimise the risk of fire wherever possible.
• Always keep children away from open flames and teach them about the dangers of fire.
• Turn off all electrical decorations and extinguish all open flames before leaving the house or going to bed.
• Be sure to check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working correctly and have a fire safety plan, in case of fire in the home; it’s this time of year when you’re more at risk of a house fire!
Ultimately, it’s important to make sure you enjoy your Halloween celebrations, whatever you end up doing. Make sure you stay safe, and don’t take any unnecessary risks.
Don’t let your Halloween be haunted by fire… and try not to eat too many sweets!
